Origin and Meaning

Nordic form of the name Bartolomaeus, which is the Latin form of Βαρθολομαιος (Bartholomaios), which is the Greek form of the Aramaic name Bar-Tôlmay (see also -us) [1] [2] [3]

The First element (Bar-) means 'son (of)'

There are different theories for the last element:

1) Aramaic tôlmay = 'furrows'

2) Hebrew תַּלְמַי (talmay) = 'furrowed, with long furrows, abounding in furrows' [4] [5] [3]

3) Hebrew תַּלְמַי (talmay) = 'bold' [4] [6]

4) Greek ptolemaios = 'warlike' [1] [7]
