In September 2022, 12 names were submitted to the Icelandic naming committee for approval. 12 of them were approved and none rejected:
Female Names
- Akarn: This Icelandic vocabulary word for an 'acorn' (fruit of an oak) had been used as an Icelandic horse name before and was now approved as human unisex name.
- Brimey: This new combination of BRIM and EY was approved.
- Freya: This name was approved now as a spelling variant of the standard spelling in Iceland, Freyja. Previously, it had been rejected in 2010.
- Gísella: This Icelandic spelling of Gisella was approved.
- Ívör: This name could be a new combination of IV or I and VÖR or a female form of Ívarr, and it was approved.
- Sirrey: This name is probably a new combination of SIRI and EY. It was approved.
Male Names
- Akarn: This Icelandic vocabulary word for an 'acorn' (fruit of an oak) had been used as an Icelandic horse name before and was now approved as human unisex name.
- Dalur: Icelandic dalur means 'valley'. It was now approved to be used as a given name in Iceland as well.
- Díbus: This name of unknown origin and meaning was approved. If you happen to know anything more about it, please let us know!
- Leónardó: This variant spelling is the third variant to be approved in Iceland after Leonardó in 2019 and Leonardo in 2021.
- Litríkur: Icelandic litríkur means 'colourful'. It was now approved to be used as a given name in Iceland as well.
- Sólar: In February 2021, a creative spelling of this name, Sólarr was added to the list of approved names. Now this standard spelling was approved as well.
- Sólmyrkvi: Icelandic sólmyrkvi is a combination of SOL and MYRK. It means 'solar eclipse' and it was now approved to be used as a given name in Iceland as well.
