In January 2022, 25 names were submitted to the Icelandic naming committee for approval. 23 of them were approved and 2 were rejected:
Female Names
- Ástmarý: This new combination of AST and MARI was approved.
- Brim: This name derives from the Icelandic vocabulary word meaning 'surf', 'surge'. It was approved to be used as a given name now.
- Fjara: Another Icelandic vocabulary word: It means 'beach', 'shore' (which will be covered by water when the tide comes in) and was approved to be used as a given name as well.
- Haffý: This pet form of names containing the name element HAF was approved.
- Lóley: This pet form of Þórveig was approved.
- Lucy: Previously, only the forms Lúcía and Lúsía were allowed in Iceland. Now this English variant was approved as well.
- Moon: This name of English, Dutch and Korean origin (click the name link for details) was approved.
- Myrkey: This new combination of MYRK and EY was approved
- Norður: 'Norður' is the Icelandic vocabulary word for 'north'. It was approved to be used as a given name for female and male usage.
- Ragn: This short form of names containing the name element RAGN was approved both for girls and for boys.
- Telekía: The Icelandic spelling of 'Telekia', a genus of flowering plant, of the family Asteraceae, was approved
- Viola: Previously, only the Icelandic spelling variants Fjóla and Víóla were allowed to use. Now this international spelling was approved as well.
- Ýda: This creative spelling of Ída was rejected.
Male Names
- Bæssam: This name of unknown origin and meaning was approved.
- Dylan: This Welsh name had been rejected twice before (in 2015 and in 2020) and now it was approved.
- Eldhamar: This Icelandic word means 'fire hammer' and was approved for usage as a given name now.
- Issa: This Arabic name was approved.
- Jöklar: This new combination of JÖKUL and HER was approved.
- Laxdal: This place name meaning 'salmon valley' was rejected.
- Lúgó: This name of unknown origin and meaning was approved.
- Matheo: This creative spelling of Matteo was approved.
- Norður: 'Norður' is the Icelandic vocabulary word for 'north'. It was approved to be used as a given name for female and male usage.
- Óríon: This Icelandic spelling of Orion was approved.
- Ragn: This short form of names containing the name element RAGN was approved both for girls and for boys.
- Regin: Previously, only the spelling Reginn was approved. Regin had been rejected three times before (2004, 2008 and 2020) but now it was approved
- Rósmar: This could either be a new combination of ROS and MAR or a male form of Rósmarý. It was approved.
- Sólmáni: This new combination of SOL and MÁN (literally 'sun moon') was approved.
