9 December 2020
6 names were submitted to the Icelandic naming committee for approval. In November 2020, 4 of them were approved and two rejected:

Female Names

  • Lilith: This name of the Babylonian/Hebrew storm and night demon was rejected.
  • Sófía: This Icelandic spelling of Sofia was approved.

Male Names

  • Nathaníel: This Icelandic spelling of Nathaniel was approved. The spelling without the h (Nataníel) was approved 15 years before on 10 August 2005.
  • Nikolaj: This name was approved. Previously, only the spelling Nikolai was allowed.
  • Regin: This spelling of Reginn was rejected in order to avoid confusion as Regin is the accusative case of Reginn in Icelandic. It had been rejected before on 28 May 2004 and 10 October 2008.
  • Sotti: This name was approved. We have not found any information about its origin and meaning. Maybe it is a pet name related to Swedish sutta = 'to suck'?
