Humanist names have been used in Sweden from the 17th century on. They are usually given names or (parts of) surnames or place names combined with a Greek or Latin ending such as:

  • -aeus
  • -ander
  • -ius
  • -sis
  • -us
  • -æus

Eventually most of those names were shortened and de-antiquated. The result were names with a at that time modern French air. The new endings of these names were e.g.

  • -ell
  • -én
  • -in
  • -lin
