Útgarðr (Old Norse Útgarðr = 'the outer world', 'area outside) is the area outside the part of the world inhabited by gods, who live in Ásgarðr and men, who live in Miðgarðr. It is the dwelling place of demons and giants. Originally it was thought to surround the whole world but in the mythological stories of the Middle Ages it tended to be located in the east of Miðgarðr. Later, in the 14th and 15th century, the sagas locate their giants and trolls futher north in the polar sea.
