Plural of Old Norse áss = 'god' (see also AS)

The Æsir are the biggest family of gods living in Ásgarðr. The other family are the Vanir.

They are gods of war and government. The female members of the Æsir are the Ásynjur.

Due to the fusion of the two families of gods through marriage and the exchange of hostages after the end of the wars, there is no clear distinction between the families.

The highest ranking of the Æsir is Óðinn.
